The One Where I Share A Talent

I've been feeling a bit of writer's block lately, so I figured I'd shake things up a bit.  I used to be an art student, but after realizing that I was not cut out for the long hours of drawing, I gave it up.  Apparently I really had some talent as I was accepted into the art program at KSU.  I had originally wanted to go into Graphic Design.  I still love it, but I could not handle the drawing and painting and 3-D design, etc.  My Drawing I class may have been one of the most stressful classes I've ever had.  Too many all-nighters and restarting drawings.  But I do have a talent.  Below is the portfolio I submitted to the KSU Art Department.  I'm pretty proud of what I have done.

1. Graphic Design: “Untitled,” 3 ½ in. x 2 in.  Business card design for print class. North Metro Tech, 2006.

The character came from an assignment in my Illustrator class to take a cartoon character and using Illustrator, make them look more like you.  I took Meg from Family Guy.  I have to believe if I was a cartoon character, this is what I'd look like.  Beauty marks and all!  The business card came from an assignment in my Print Design class.  I decided to make a business card for work.  Thought I did a relatively good job.  {Big blank space is where I blacked out vital info.}

2. Graphic Design: “Untitled,” 3 ½ in. x 2 in.  Business card design for print class. North Metro Tech, 2006.

I'm not going to lie, I'm actually pretty proud of this business card.  {Big blank space is where I blacked out vital info.}  We had to design two cards and this was my second.  I especially loved the way my pen tool head came out.  {In Illustrator, this is the tool used to free hand.}

3. Graphic Design: “Myspace in a can,” 7 3/8 in. x 6 in.  Aerosol can design for print class. North Metro Tech, 2007.

This is honestly my favorite design.  We had to take an aerosol can and make a label for it.  This was before Facebook became really big and everyone was still using MySpace.  At the time, the school had locked all the computers from using MySpace.  So I came up with this clever little product.  I happen to love it.

4. Graphic Design: “Shindler’s List: The Musical,” 8 in. x 13 in.  Poster design project for design class. North Metro Tech, 2007.

I LOVE how this turned out.  You may look at it and go, "Keanu Reeves, huh?!"  Well, let me explain.  We were given a set of movie titles, a set of actresses, and a set of actors.  We had to design a movie poster with those three elements.  I came up with this design and I was so proud of what I did.

5. Graphic Design: “Ascension,” 8 in. x 13 in.  Design project, in 2-D Design class. Kennesaw State University, 2008.

My very first piece in my 2-D Design class.  I honestly don't remember what the assignment was, but I remember we could only play with gray scale.

6. Drawing: “Enlightened in Struggle,” 12 ½ in. x 9 ½ in.  Microns, in 2-D Design class. Kennsaw State University, 2008.

I have to say, my favorite design from this semester.  The assignment was to portray two conflicting emotions.  I think I nailed it.  What do you think?  See any underline meanings, because there's one there.  Ü

7. Drawing: “Cherubic Jacob,” 15 in. x 21 in.  Graphite, for Drawing class. Kennesaw State University, 2009.

This was for my Drawing I class.  I learned two things that semester: 1) I HATE drawing.  2) I HATE using graphite.  It was such a hassle to shade.  But I do love how little Jacob turned out, mostly...except his little oinker nose.  =P

8. Drawing: “Tres Manzanas,” 10 in. x 22 in.  Charcoal, for Drawing class. Kennesaw State University, 2009.

My initial reaction to this piece was, "I loathe charcoal."  But I actually grew to love it.  And I really do like how this turned out.

9. Drawing: “Vegetable Basket,” 20 in. x 14 in.  Charcoal, still-life for Drawing class. Kennesaw State University, 2009.

The purpose of this assignment was all about texture.  I think I started this piece about 4 times.  Once I got a good start, I believe it took about 11 hours to complete.  This time I learned four things: 1) I detest wicker baskets.  2) Vegetables suck.  3)  I'm really getting into charcoal.  4)  I adore fabric.  Fabric was so fun to shade.

10. Drawing: “Shiny Things,” 20 in. x 12 in.  Charcoal, still-life in Drawing class. Kennesaw State University, 2009.

The purpose of this assignment was all about shiny stuff.  Again, LOVE fabric and I was so thrilled at how my glass bottle in the foreground by the phone turned out.  Not sure why, but it just mesmerizes me.  My telephone dial on the other hand...I gave up trying to fix that.

11. Drawing: “Memory,” 21 in. x 16 in.  Charcoal, for drawing class. Kennesaw State University, 2009.

This assignment was to capture a memory.  I love Disney World so I combined a picture I had of the ToonTown sign and the Mickey Mailbox that I took.  I was tickled at this.  I ended up making a copy to frame and give to a dear friend who is a huge Disney fan.

I still can't believe that I did these three years ago.  It seems like a lifetime.  I still have all of my art supplies and one of these days I'll actually pull them out and try something else.  Hope you enjoyed!

  2. Wow, this is very impressive. I can't even make a decent stick figure, and I'm in awe of those of you who can create this sort of art. I particularly like "Shiny Things". Great work.
