Sweat is Fat Crying

I've been posting this little mantra a lot since a coworker sent it to me. I love it. I wish that each bead of sweat was equivalent to a 1/2 pound or something. I sweat like a man...I'd be really thin by now!  Ü  Yesterday I came up with another one.  It's funny how on Mondays I'm all pepped and ready to go.  Thirty minutes of walking is a breeze and I almost don't feel a thing.  However, come Tuesdays after about five minutes, I am feeling the burn.  It's really only in one spot though.  The muscle in the back outer area of the leg.  I think it's called the tibialis anterior.  No, I didn't really know that off the top of my head.  I looked it up here.  {Don't you just love Google?}  Anyway, I managed to make it through 20 minute of walking.  That was really pushing through the pain.  A new mantra was born: Pain is fat in bloody agony.  Why else would it hurt so good?

Today's walk went fairly well.  I definitely felt some burn, but I fought through it and completed 30 minutes...about 1.68 miles.  I want to try to get to a slow jogging pace, but that will probably be a few weeks from now.  I really can't believe how unconditioned my legs have gotten in the last ten years.  My mom has forever told me that I had such hot legs in marching band.  Let's think about that...marching practice for 2 1/2 hours 3 days a week and then football games.  A few Saturdays of all-day practices and an entire week of band camp.  Yeah, I can see why I'd have hot legs then.  Now, it's a different story.  My husband however...Ü

I've learned a few things in the last week that I'd like to share.
  • Greek yogurt is...interesting.  It's packed with more protein than regular yogurt so we're trying to do that more.
  • Sometimes, calories don't matter.  When using the My Fitness Pal app, you only see the main calorie count.  It's not until you look at the item individually before you see the other nutritional values.  I'm not saying this is bad, but with some foods, the other stuff is better to look at.  I'm trying to remember that when I eat high calorie foods, but are packed with protein and little fat.  This morning's breakfast was almost 600 calories, but it also consisted of more protein-laden foods.  Oh, and let's not forget about fruits.  One medium sized Macintosh apple has 80 calories, but 159 mg potassium.  What's potassium good for?  Breaking down lactic acid in the muscles...that burning sensation.  So, moral of that story?  Calories aren't always more important.
  • Speaking of apples...  Have you ever eaten a piece of fruit while hungry?  Yesterday I experienced a very interesting thing.  I was pretty hungry around 4 pm, which is pretty usual.  I generally have a small snack before going to class because I know it will be 7:30 or so before I'm home for dinner.  I used to eat whatever was around me, but usually chips or something.  I could eat almost an entire bag of chips.  Pretty disgusting when I think about it now.  That apple yesterday?  I was full after eating the whole thing.  Good foods fill you up. Funny how that is, huh?
  • Veggies are your BFF.  I think I read that vegetables should take up about 1/2 your plate at dinner.  While that may seem like a lot, it really isn't.  Plus, you get full faster.
  • Cleaning works up a sweat.  Oh man.  I was doing some house cleaning on Sunday and realized I always work up a sweat.  Yeah, you totally burn calories when cleaning.  Even more if it's vacuuming!  I mean, it's a pretty straight-forward concept, right?  If you're sweating and your body is moving {and getting hot} then you should be burning calories.  But it really just hit me on Sunday.  Cleaning is totally an option in My Fitness Pal that I will be taking advantage of.  Ü
I tried trikking again for about 5 minutes.  Going down is awesome.  Going uphill?  Less awesome.  I totally feel it in my entire body, which is why I stopped after 5 minutes.  I definitely look up to my hubby for being able to bust out 30 minutes on it and walking up one hill {it was a beast, I'll totally admit that!}.  One day,  I'll be able to get it going like he does.  Hopefully!

  1. Great post! I've heard some of this before, but needed to hear it again. Interesting how we can know this stuff but keep forgetting how well it works - and how good it feels!

    1. Erin, I don't know about the "how good it feels" nonsense. It doesn't feel too good right now. =P Haha! No, I do feel pretty good. There are times during the day where I feel like I'm dragging then I eat something healthy and it's like I'm at 110% again. Another funny thing that healthy foods do. Ü
